SolidariTee first registered as a charity in 2019, following an explosion of momentum built as a grassroots student movement in the two years previously.
In the intervening years, we have remained entirely volunteer led and run. With no paid staff, we deliver impact through our network of grassroots partner NGOs providing refugee legal and mental health assistance in Greece. We also make change by uniting students and young people in support of compassionate, rights-based policies and solutions to support refugees and other people forced to migrate in vulnerable situations, and through combating rhetoric aimed to create fear and mistrust of refugees and migrants.
Now, more than 10 years since the 'refugee crisis' first made media headlines in 2015, where more than a million people reached Europe in search of safety, we're looking ahead to the 2025/2026 academic year.
We are currently recruiting for four essential leadership roles, with applications open until midnight on Friday 28th March.
With close support provided from our volunteer CEO alongside our board of trustees, two of these roles are primarily suited to current students, whilst the other two are open to all, particularly those with professional experience outside of a student setting:
Student President
Secretary
Student Network Coordinator
Social Media Manager
The main period of responsibility for each of these roles would be from August 2025 - July 2026, but we hope to offer an extended induction and handover period throughout the final semester of the academic year, to give the selected candidates the opportunity to be involved in the setup of the next year's team. To read more and to apply, please take a look at the role descriptions below. If you'd like this information in another format, please email boardoftrustees@solidaritee.org.uk and we would be happy to support with this.
Supporting refugees, particularly abroad, is far less topical, and public awareness is far lower than it was when we were first set up. This means that, in many ways, our original mission is perhaps more important now than ever. Since being set up, we've worked with more than 1500 student volunteers, and provided more than half a million pounds to our partner NGOs.
At the beginning, SolidariTee was set up by undergraduate students, and was entirely student-run. Increasingly, as our volunteer community began to graduate, our board of trustees has begun to include 'SolidariTee alumni' as well as other board members who bring key expertise that they have gained through their professional careers. Previous SolidariTee student volunteers have gone on to work across the UK charity and international humanitarian sector, including at British Red Cross, War Child, the NSPCC, and Freedom From Torture, as well as in a variety of legal and mental health-focused roles. In order to ensure our long-term organisational resilience and to broaden opportunities to participate in our movement, we have focused this year on creating additional spaces for people who not students to take on roles within SolidariTee. Whilst retaining the independence, creativity, and agency of our student volunteer movement, we hope that this move will prioritise the participation of all those who want to contribute to change that is so badly needed in the support available for refugees in Greece and the UK, and enrich the student volunteering experience by providing increased opportunities for skill building, mentorship, and opportunities to collaborate in more diverse teams.
We really encourage anyone interested in these roles to apply, even if you're not sure that you meet all of the criteria - research shows that many people, particularly women, are put off from applying for roles if they feel that they don't align to every single requirement.
If you're interested in other, lower-commitment roles, please stay tuned and be sure to have subscribed to our mailing list - we will be publishing other opportunities very soon!
Thank you for your interest in being part of the SolidariTee team, and we hope to hear from you soon!
